How long do the sides have to be for a pretty nice pompadour?

I have not long hair nor short, but I want a pomp. Should I go to the barber or a hairstylist. Im a greaser I had decent hair but I want a pomp. I just want help for the sides/back length. What number should I get if I go to the barber?
